I’ve always loved the idea of being able to sit down and paint or doodle or draw, but let’s be honest, it just doesn’t come natural to me! But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it when I get some direction. I just need someone to give me some instruction and then I love it! If you’re like me, then you’re going to love these ways to create art for beginners without having the skill or training…yet. 🙂
Winnie’s Picks
I recently completed a paint by number painting of Paris and it turned out so great! This was a great project to work on a little bit over a long period of time. Winnie’s Picks helps you create art for beginniers by providing paint, quality canvas, paint brushes, and instructions in a paint by number format. And their paintings are not simple, they’re amazing! Impressionist art is my favorite style so I couldn’t wait to get this done. I’m framing it and putting it in my room!
Now let’s compare this painting to one I did 10 years ago of the Eiffel Tower. We didn’t have any art in our apartment when we first got married and I wanted something in our bedroom besides all our wedding photos. I had visited Paris when I was in college and had some pictures of it. So I painted this! Not absolutely horrible, but definitely nothing like the one above!
For less than $40, I now have this gorgeous picture that I also painted myself. Not a hard choice, right?
You can even upload your own photo to do a custom paint by number. How fun is that? You can do your pets, your family, a favorite building or place. Check out Winnie’s Picks to create your own art that’s beautiful enough to hang in your home!
Let’s Make Art
If you would like to try watercolor, Let’s Make Art has a Youtube channel with free weekly art for beginngers tutorials. They’re about an hour each and she teaches you some watercolor art techniques for beginners before starting the painting. I did a water color flower tutorial recently and this is how it turned out! I’m excited to try another one soon! She just came out with a sloth tutorial and my daughter loves sloths. It would be fun to paint it together.
Sketched and Sealed
Another watercolor option is a website called Sketched and Sealed. She has a free 5 day challenge once a month or you can pay for her Watercolor Playground subscription that comes with classes and an inspirational journal. You can join the waiting list for access to when it opens again and enjoy the free challenge until then.
Handlettering
If you’re looking to practice your brush lettering and calligraphy, By Dawn Nicole has over 20 free brush lettering worksheets to practice on. I printed these out two years ago (I remember because I worked on them in the hospital right before my daughter was born) and they were awesome! You can even use them on your iPad if you want to practice writing on a digital surface, which I really want to learn to do.
Bake
And if you tried these and they just aren’t your jam, baking is definitely a form of art! Try these tasty black and white cupcakes! They have a cream cheese frosting and are a chocolate lovers dream!
I hope one of these art techniques looks appealing to you and will help your creativity flow. You CAN create art even as a beginner! Comment below on your favorite places to learn to make art. And make sure to tag me in your work on instagram! You can find me at Alexis Tanner Lane.
