Women of Faith in the Latter Days Volume Three tells the stories of LDS women who were born between 1846 and 1870. This is an interesting time period because these women were born during the Mormon pioneer handcart trek to Utah. So they were born in Utah, crossed the plains as small children, or came to Utah when they were older which includes by train. We are familiar with many stories of the women who crossed the plains, but these are their children as well as others who joined the church.
These women also lived through the turn of the century. So much changed in America during that time! These women not only lived pioneer lives in the newly established Utah territory, but also participated in women’s suffrage movements, women’s councils, lived through world wars, and modernized women lifestyles.
When I first opened the book, I flipped to the index and of course looked for people related to my husband. It’s so fun to be married to a family with a strong LDS history. People know things about them! Which provides stories you can share with your children as well.
And I found Emily Tanner Richards who is Alan’s great great grandfather’s sister. So third great aunt I believe? She was an amazing woman who was very involved in the women’s suffrage movement and helping Utah receive statehood by representing the Mormon women who were actually already receiving all same rights as men in Utah. I love that she was a pioneer for women, involved in so many councils in Utah and nationwide, actively made a difference for women locally and nationally, but was also remembered as a devout mother who balanced home and politics. What a great example!

I also really like that the stories about the different women are written by different people so each is it’s own story and different things in each woman’s life are highlighted.
These women are great examples to all of us! They accomplished so much, but were also faithful LDS women and many had families that they were also devoted to.
The Women of Faith series will contain 7 volumes when finished. I’m excited for volume 6 and 7 because those are our grandmothers and mothers (if you’re in your 20s like me). These women we could know! And they grew up in such a different world than we did.
If you want to read about amazing LDS women, definitely check out the Women of Faith volumes, especially volume 3!
