Back in 2011, I made some Spider Cupcakes that were really fun, but I thought I would freshen up my design and take some better pictures. 🙂 But that was a fun design too with all the eyes, so make sure to check that one out too! But this treat is so fun and delicious and your kids are going to love it! It’s great for Halloween parties or just to eat with your family. Here’s how you put it together.
What you need
To assemble these spider cupcakes, you’ll need a few different ingredients. I’ve included the recipes below that I used for the cupcakes and the frosting.
- Chocolate cupcakes
- Chocolate frosting
- Black licorice
- Edible googly eyes
- grass tip
- piping bags
- sprinkles
Cupcakes
Start with a delicious chocolate cupcake recipe. You can always make some from a box, but I think a chocolate cupcake from scratch is more delicious. So if you have the time, you can make these cupcakes that I found at Desert Now, Dinner Later. They are a richer chocolate flavor that isn’t too sweet, so it goes great with a sweet chocolate frosting. She has tips for high altitude (which is what I need in Utah) so make sure to check out those notes at the bottom of the post.
frosting
The frosting that I used for these cupcakes was soooo good! I used this recipe from Momma Lew. I added just a touch more powdered sugar to make it a bit sweeter.
Assembling the Spider Cupcakes
Now that you have all your items, it’s time to assemble. Take your chocolate cupcakes and frost them with your grass tip. You can make the frosting look like fur or hair by squeezing the frosting out of the piping bag and quickly letting go as you pull up. This makes the frosting stand up. Pipe around the entire top of the cupcake. It even helps you cover up any ugly spots on your cupcake like sinking or overflow (like mine did).
Once the cupcake is frosted, add some sprinkles (I did black ones) and add the edible googly eyes. Now you need your licorice. I bought red vines and the black licorice was pretty thick, so I cut each piece in half. Then I took each half and cut it into 4 strips. I found that kitchen scissors made it much easier to cut the licorice.
Then take your 8 legs and stick 4 into the frosting on each side of the cupcake. And there you have it! Cute spider cupcakes sure to impress! My kids loved them! I think only one of my kids actually likes black licorice, but they all loved the chocolate cupcakes! Enjoy!
