I recently read My Fair Gentleman, a Proper Romance Novel by Nancy Campbell Allen. If you haven’t read any Proper Romances and love the Jane Austen era, you need to start reading these books! They are cute, clean, old fashioned romances and I love them! Think Pride and Prejudice with modern language and a quicker read.
My goal is to read 12 books this year and this is my third book of the year, so I am on the right track!
My Fair Gentleman is a twist on My Fair Lady. A proper Lady Ivy Carlisle has been asked to teach the rough sailor Jack Elliot how to be an Earl and accepted into the highly judgmental society of the upper class. Jack recently inherited the title from his grandfather who had disinherited his father. Jack wants nothing to do with the rich life and wants to make his own fortune, but he cares deeply for the welfare of his sister and sick mother and agrees to become the Earl.
I love that the romance between Ivy and Jack slowly grows and you watch the characters develop an appreciation for each other that grows into love. I also like that you like both characters from the beginning, but in different ways. I love that this book makes you feel happy as you finish it.
This book definitely has some intense moments as a few “accidents” occur and I wanted to keep reading to see how things would turn out! My Fair Gentleman is a fun quick read and true to the proper romance series. I enjoyed the twist on My Fair Lady and it was different enough that I didn’t feel like I had heard this story before.
I enjoy reading books based in the regency era to get an idea of what life may have been like then. It makes me want to go back in time and be there, just for a day, so see what life was like. My husband thinks it would be boring, but I still wish I could see it!
*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
