The other night my mom, sisters, and I made some block pumpkins together. Now this is a big deal for all of us to make one because one of my sisters hated doing anything craft related growing up. But she’s married now and is feeling more domestic. 🙂
So we made these awesome
Block Pumpkins!
Block Pumpkins!
Here’s what you need to make your own:
Orange Paint
A Dark Brown Wood Stain
Old Rag
Ribbon/Tulle/Burlap/Wired Leaves/etc.
Hot Glue Gun (Preferably with wood glue)
Wood Blocks:
2 – 4 in x 4 in
3 – 4 in x 6 in
2 – 4 in x 8 in
2 – 1 in x 1.5 in
To start, grab your blocks. You can get a long 2 x 4 at stores like Home Depot and have them cut the measurements for you if you don’t have a wood saw at home. I think they do the first 10 cuts free or something like that. And I must mention that my wonderful dad cut and sanded all of the blocks for us! Thanks dad!
Then paint your blocks orange except for the 1 in x 1.5 in blocks!. You can leave the bottom unpainted since it won’t be showing, but make sure you get the rest of the sides.
After the paint has dried, sand the edges. The wood stain will show darker here so do as much or as little as you want. I even lightly sanded the top for a little more darker effect, but you don’t have to.
Then take your 1 in x 1.5 in blocks. Dip an old rag into the wood stain and rub it on all sides of the blocks. Then wipe off the stain with the rag or you can use a dry paper towel. I found it was better for me to use a paper towel or the rag becomes too drenched with wood stain.
Then do the same to all your wood blocks. Wipe the wood stain with the rag on all the blocks and then wipe them off with a dry rag or paper towel.
Then take your hot glue gun and glue your pumpkins into stacks. The order for the big one is: 4 x 6, 4 x 8, 4 x 8, 4 x 6, and then the 1 x 1.5 stem. Then for the small one the order is: 4 x 4. 4 x 6, 4 x 4, and the 1 x 1.5 for the stem. I staggered my blocks slightly, but my mom and sister did them straight. It’s up to you which you like best!
Then add your tulle, ribbon, burlap, wired leaves, or anything else you would like to do to decorate the top. We used green sparkly tulle, burlap ribbon, orange ribbon, and cut two pieces of wired leaves. And there’s your block pumpkins! Perfect for the entire season of fall!
