Steampunk
A subgenre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West”, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power (according to Wikipedia).
Have you heard of the steampunk genre? I hadn’t until I read Beauty and the Clockwork Beast. It’s dated in the Victorian era among the wealthy British class and it’s filled with vampires, ghosts, werewolves and steam powered technology. This proper romance is full of mystery and will keep you on your toes!
I have to be honest here for a minute, this was my first vampire book. I didn’t read Twilight or any other vampire books so this was a new one for me. This book was so intriguing! I read through it really quickly, I had to know what happened next!
Lucy’s newly married cousin Kate is suddenly sick and Lucy is worried about her. So she stays with her in her new home where Kate’s husband’s older brother, the new Earl Lord Blackwell, also resides. While Kate is staying with her cousin she receives unexpected and frightening visits from the ghost of the Earl’s sister who was tragically killed. Her goal is to unravel the mystery of the sister’s death and to make sure her cousin is well.
My Review
This book is suspenseful, filled with mystery, but also has the proper romance aspect which I always love. I love the Victoria Era books and this one has the steampunk twist which adds a whole new dimension!
I do have to say, it is a little gory with the vampire stuff and the violent death of the sister is often revisited, so if you’re squeamish at all, you may not enjoy parts of this book. But it was interesting and I loved getting to know the characters throughout the book. If you’re looking for a proper romance steampunk mystery, then this is the book for you!
