Get citrusy with the orange slices
Natural decorations are a traditional staple of the Nordic Christmas style, which is handy to know because the Nordics are connoisseurs when it comes to all things festive. With that in mind, why not try this cost-effective, simple Christmas decoration?
Dried orange slices can be strung together to create beautiful garlands or hanging decorations. They can even be used to decorate the Christmas tree. My sister-in-law just did this and they look amazing! Plus, they smell amazing!
To create your dried orange decoration, cut a couple of large oranges into fairly thin slices, baking them in the oven (on parchment paper) for three hours and thirty minutes to four hours (making sure to flip them) and voila! Poke two holes in each slice and thread a string through as many as you like and your au natural decoration is ready.
The rustic decoration looks delicate hanging from a chair, the ceiling, or spread over the cabinet as part of a charming Christmas display. Be sure to get the cabinet in tip-top shape with this cabinet refinishing company before you start laying the decorations out.
Decorate the Christmas tree lights vertically
This idea is a life-saver. It will save you time and aggravation as you deck out the Christmas tree.
Most of us start the tree decoration by swiveling around the tree, untangling the lights as we go. It can be a pain to spread the lights evenly when branches (especially on live trees) are unevenly spaced. The worst is when you put the lights on and they aren’t spread all over the tree evenly. That happens to me every year!
The solution is to spread the lights vertically up and down rather than horizontally around the tree. This way, the string of lights will be evenly spread. If a couple of lights look out of place it’s no bother – the string can easily be adjusted. This also means a shorter string of lights can be used to decorate, saving time and energy.

Upcycled Glass Bottles
A fabulous way to upcycle empty glass bottles is to buy a battery-powered string of lights to put inside.
The lights look brighter and more elegant in empty wine and spirit bottles that are mostly transparent. To get the full effect, use multiple bottles of different shapes and sizes and place them either around the room for an evenly-lit space or in one area to create a festive centerpiece.
Quick tips:
- Be sure to thoroughly wash the empty bottles with soap to avoid any unwanted odors.
- Before adding your lights, let the washed bottles dry of any remaining water droplets.
Personalized Ornaments
If you’re stuck on what to get your relatives for Christmas, a personalized ornament is a thoughtful gift that can be used every year. There are lots of great places to purchase a customized ornament. But if you’re feeling crafty, a plain ornament, some glitter, glue, paint, or even permanent markers will do the trick. This is also a great gift idea for the little ones to give to their older family members, as you can turn it into a festive arts and crafts session while teaching them the importance of giving. We made ornaments last year and sent them to relatives. The kids had so much fun and it’s been great to see the ornaments show up on trees again this year. We love this simple Christmas decoration tradition!
Decorative Christmas Boxes
To curate a look of festive abundance in your home, gift props add a little magic and are easy to create at home. This idea may not be the best if you have young children that are eager to unwrap anything they can get their hands on (like mine) or if you have any curious pets. We can’t put out presents until Christmas morning at my house. 😉
But if you have an empty cardboard box or shoe-box lying around, wrap it in Christmas paper of your choice and style it with a ribbon or stick-on bow. The merrier with this decoration idea!
